Thirty years ago we started the suckler herd with Shorthorn/Limousin cross heifers on Limousin bulls. We then tried out a Blonde bull and in recent years we have used Charolais bulls exclusively. We put an Angus on the heifers for their first calving.

what breed are they apart from charolais

  3. 970garyt says:

    Do you keep many cows?

  4. DownOnTheFarmEngland says:

The Charolais produce calves with the potential to grow very fast, but they can’t finish on grass. They have to be fed cereals to finish.

Gorgeous beasts, we have a Hereford bull small birth weight calves but crossed with a few Simmental mums he turns out monsters. What are the Charolais like at foraging in pasture without being power fed. We have two Charolais heifers due to calve with the Hereford next spring so I guess we will see for ourselves if they can do the job…
